Oia is famously a sunset. I went looking for what comes after. The blue hour, when the white walls go violet and the cafés start putting candles on the tables, is the painting nobody else is making.
There are two paintings of Oia in this shop. Fira gets a postcard; Oia gets both — postcard and original.
The original is blue hour. I know everyone goes for sunset. I sat through the sunset with everyone else, on the wrong step, and then I waited.
By eight o’clock the streets were quiet. The light dropped to a kind of underwater blue, and the cliffs went the colour of new bruises, and that’s when the painting started to make sense. There’s no rush in blue hour. You have time to choose your colours.
