Santorini Oia, Blue Hour

Everyone goes to Oia for the sunset. The streets fill at six, empty by eight, and the cafés put away the chairs.

The painting is what happens after that. Blue hour, fifteen minutes that don’t make it onto any postcard — when the white walls go violet and the dome on the cliff goes coral and the sea stops looking like the sea.

I painted this from a step three streets back from the famous one. The lights in the houses came on one by one, like someone counting under their breath.
