Watercolor Hong Kong.

Watercolor of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Hong Kong is the city I grew up in. The harbour, the trams, the kind of summer rain that turns to steam before it hits the pavement. I trained at PolyU on Chatham Road. I painted my way out of it slowly. I'm still painting it back.

I trained as an interior designer in Hong Kong — at PolyU, on Chatham Road, in a faculty that smelled like printer toner and architectural model glue. The city was my classroom long before that, though.

The harbour is the obvious painting. The less obvious one is the bus to Aberdeen, the steep streets in Sai Ying Pun, the fluorescent light of an MTR car at midnight when half the carriage is asleep on the way home.

What’s on Etsy from Hong Kong is the postcard version — Victoria Harbour in spring. The original above is the longer answer to the same question.

If you grew up here, you know. If you didn’t — Hong Kong is the city my whole studio is built on, even now, even from a balcony in Taipei or a kitchen in Vancouver. It’s the painting under all the other paintings.
