Lviv Rooftops at Golden Hour

I went to Lviv on a whim. A friend said it was the prettiest city no one talks about, and she was right.

The rooftops are the thing. Mansard, terra cotta, copper that’s gone to verdigris in a hundred different ways. In late afternoon they all turn the same colour — somewhere between honey and a struck match — and the whole city looks like it’s holding its breath.

I painted this from the second-floor window of a café whose name I never wrote down. The owner brought me a third coffee without asking. Somewhere outside, a tram stopped running for the day, and the silence that filled in afterwards was the kind that made the painting easier.

This is one of one. There won’t be another exactly like it. The original ships from Vancouver, signed, in protective packaging.
